Εν αρχή ήν ο Λόγος...

There was Eru, the One, who in Arda is called Iluvatar; and he

made first the Ainur, the Holy Ones, that were the offspring of his thought,

and they were with him before aught else was made. And he spoke to

them, propounding to them themes of music; and they sang before him,

and he was glad. But for a long while they sang only each alone, or but

few together, while the rest hearkened; for each comprehended only that

part of me mind of Il ̇vatar from which he came, and in the understanding

of their brethren they grew but slowly. Yet ever as they listened they came

to deeper understanding, and increased in unison and harmony

 Έτσι ξεκίνησαν λοιπόν όλα. Ο Έρου, ο Ένας, έφτιαξε τους Άινουρ (κάτι σαν τους αγγέλους της χριστιανικής θρησκείας), οι οποίοι ήταν τέκνα της σκέψης του. Και τους μίλησε και τους ζήτησε να αρχίσουν τα τραγουδάνε. Και καθώς τραγουδούσαν ο Έρου τους άλλαζε το τραγούδι και αποκτούσαν όλο και περισσότερη αρμονία αναμεταξύ τους. Long story short, όπως και στην χριστιανική θρησκεία (Τα έργα του Τόλκιν ήταν βαθιά θρησκευτικά, αν και τα επιμελούταν συνεχώς για να μην είναι αυτό πολύ φανερό αφού δεν ήταν αυτός ο σκοπός τους), ένας από τους Άινουρ, ο Μέλκορ, ο πιο δυνατός και σεβάσμιος ανάμεσα στους Άινουρ, άρχισε να αλλάζει το τραγούδι και να αυτοσχεδιάζει λόγω του εγωισμού και της μεγαλομανίας του.

Then Iluvatar spoke, and he said: Mighty are the Ainur, and

mightiest among them is Melkor; but that he may know, and all the Ainur,

that I am Il ̇vatar, those things that ye have sung, I will show them forth,

that ye may see what ye have done. And thou, Melkor, shalt see that no

theme may be played that hath not its uttermost source in me, nor can

any alter the music in my despite. For he that attempteth this shall prove

but mine instrument in the devising of things more wonderful, which he

himself hath not imagined.

Και με αυτά τα λόγια ο Έρου τους έδειξε ένα μεγάλο όραμα, το αποτέλεσμα της μουσικής τους, η οποία έμελλε να κατασκευάσει την Εα, της Άρντα, την γη και τον κόσμο της Μέσης Γης.
  

...and they saw a new World made visible before them, and it was globed amid the Void, and it was sustained therein,but was not of it. And as they looked and wondered this World began to unfold its history, and it seemed to them that it lived and grew

Kαι μέσα σε αυτό τον κόσμο είδαν ζωντανά πλάσματα, τα παιδιά του Ιλούβαταρ, τα Ξωτικά και τους Ανθρώπους, τα οποία φτιάχτηκαν απευθείας από τον Έρου και κανένας από τους Άινουρ δε πήρε μέρος στη δημιουργία τους παρά μόνο ο Ένας.

But the other Ainur looked upon this habitation set within the vast

spaces of the World, which the Elves call Arda, the Earth; and their hearts

rejoiced in light, and their eyes beholding many colours were filled with

gladness

Και ο Έρου που τους είδε να χαίρονται και να είναι ευτυχισμένοι με το όραμα, του έδωσε σάρκα και οστά με τα λόγια του και έβαλε την Ιερή, Άφθαρτη και Διαρκής Φωτιά στην μέση της Έα, στην καρδιά του κόσμου, για να γεννηθεί ο κόσμος.

...and those of you that will may go

down into it. And suddenly the Ainur saw afar off a light, as it were a

cloud with a living heart of flame; and they knew that this was no vision

only, but that Il ̇vatar had made a new thing: E‰, the World that Is

Έτσι ορισμένοι από τους Άινουρ, κατέβηκαν στον καινούριο κόσμο και τους ονόμασαν Βάλαρ (Οι Δυνάμεις του Κόσμου). Όταν έφτασαν όμως είδαν τη Γη γυμνή και σε καμία περίπτωση δεν ήταν όπως στο όραμα του Έρου. Eίχαν φτάσει στην Αρχή του Χρόνου και κατάλαβαν ότι όλα όσα τους έδειξε ο Έρου ήταν προμηνύματα και κομμάτια του Μέλλοντος. Η δουλειά τους, η μοίρα τους, ήταν να ετοιμάσουν την Γη έτσι ώστε να τη βρουν έτοιμη τα παιδιά του Ιλούβαταρ όταν θα ερχόταν το πλήρωμα του χρόνου για να ξυπνήσουν. Ο Μέλκορ όμως βλέποντας την ομορφιά αλλά και την πολύ μεγάλη πιθανότητα που είχε αυτή η Γη να τελειοποιηθεί, προσπάθησε να την ονομάσει κτήμα του.

But Manwe was the brother of Melkor in the mind of Iluvatar, and

he was the chief instrument of the second theme that Iluvatar had raised

up against the discord of Melkor; and he called unto himself many spirits

both greater and less, and they came down into the fields of Arda and

aided Manwe, lest Melkor should hinder the fulfilment of their labour for

ever, and Earth should wither ere it flowered. And Manwe said unto Melkor:

This kingdom thou shalt not take for thine own, wrongfully, for many

others have laboured here do less than thou.í And there was strife between

Melkor and the other Valar; and for that time Melkor withdrew and departed

to other regions and did there what he would; but he did not put the

desire of the Kingdom of Arda from his heart.

Kαι έτσι ξεκίνησε ο μεγάλος πόλεμος μεταξύ των Βάλαρ και του Μέλκορ για την κυριαρχία στην Άρντα.

...and they built lands and Melkor destroyed them; valleys they delved and

Melkor raised them up; mountains they carved and Melkor threw them

down; seas they hollowed and Melkor spilled them; and naught might

have peace or come to lasting growth, for as surely as the Valar began a

labour so would Melkor undo it or corrupt it. And yet their labour was not

all in vain; and though nowhere and in no work was their will and purpose

wholly fulfilled, and all things were in hue and shape other than the Valar

had at first intended, slowly nonetheless the Earth was fashioned and

made firm.

Kάπως έτσι πλάστηκε ο κόσμος της Μέσης Γης μέχρι να ξυπνήσουν τα παιδιά του Ιλούβαταρ.
